Shaanxi Normal University

    Welcome to Shaanxi Normal University prospectus 2005. Shaanxi Normal University was founded in 1944. It is a multi-disciplinary, comprehensive university directly subordinated to the Chinese Ministry of Education. With many years of effort, it has developed into one of the key normal universities in China, entitled to confer the Bachelor's, Master's and Doctor's degrees. It is also among those who are authorized by the State to establish centers for post-doctoral studies. The University offers 62 majors, 6 post doctoral studies, 2 doctoral studies of first rank discipline, 26 doctoral programs, and 95 master programs. In addition, university has 47 research institutions.

    SNU is located in a world-famous ancient city Xi'an, which served as a capital for 13 dynasties. The beautiful, historic city attracts one million overseas tourists each year. The famous Terracotta Warriors & Horses is named as the eighth miracle in the world and became the symbol of Xi'an.

    The University has two campuses, covering an area of 200 hectares. Yanta Campus lies at the historical site of Qixia Gate of Chang'an City Wall in Tang Dynasty. There is the Great Wild Goose Pagoda to the east of the the university, and Qujiang Lake to the south of it. The ancient site of ???Round Altar??à in Sui and Tang Dynasties is standing just within the campus, where the emperors in Tang Dynasty offered sacrifices to the heaven. Chang'an Campus, located at Guodu County, enjoys grand scale, advanced teaching facilities. The Chinese Ministry of Education granted the University a title of ???Civilized Campus??à for its beautiful environment with green shade everywhere.

    Shaanxi Normal University comprises 16 schools and 1 department. The 16 schools are the School of International Business, the School of Life Sciences, the School of Foreign Languages, the School of Chinese Linguistics and Literature, the School of Education, the School of History and Culture, the School of Media and Communication, the School of Art, the School of Tourism and Environmental Science, the College of Adult Education, the School of Mathematics, the School of Chemistry and Material Science, the School of Computer Science, the School of Physics and Information Technology, the School of Political Economics, the Sport Institute and the Department of Food Engineering.

    The total number of student enrollment at the University is around 40000, among whom there are 3179 graduates and 13265 undergraduates and another 20000, who are doing either their lifelong education or on-line learning. There are approximately 400 international students as well.

    The University stresses on the improvement of its material conditions. It has many modern teaching buildings and most advanced laboratories and other teaching and entertainment facilities. The imposing University library is a place which arouses every student's pride for its features of ancient Chinese-style construction. It has a collection of 2.256 million volumes, some of which are rare books and the only existing copies. It is reaching the top in terms of its collection in west China. In addition, the university also has its own publishing house?athe Shaanxi Normal University Press and several collegial academic journals. ???Journal of Shaanxi Normal University??à is considered to be one of the key periodicals in the academic circles in China.

    The number of faculty of the university is 1166, among whom nearly 800 have the title of associate professor and above. There are 346 people who have the Ph.D degree and 300 who have the MA/ MS degree. In recent years, the University has actively adjusted its policy for attracting brains. As a result, almost 100 well-known scholars from home and abroad have been lured as guest professors to the University, among whom are 10 members of the Chinese Academy of Science and quite a few overseas Chinese scholars who are active in world-known universities. There are even professors from Harvard University and Columbia University.
